Prep is the product
Paint fails from underneath. The finish that still looks fresh in year six was washed, sanded, filled, spot-primed and given two honest coats in year zero — everything else is the same tins applied faster. We quote preparation explicitly, do it visibly, and invite you to run a hand over the walls before a topcoat goes anywhere near them.
On the Lower North Shore's older housing that discipline matters double: layered paint history on federation trims, hairline-cracked set walls, weatherboards and sills where sun and salt air have been working for decades. These surfaces reward patience and punish shortcuts, publicly, within a couple of seasons.
The carpenter-painter advantage
Most exterior repaints uncover carpentry: a soft sill, a split weatherboard, fretwork that needs a section replicated. For a painting contractor that's a variation and a delay; for us it's Tuesday — the same crew cuts out the rot, matches the profile, primes the repair and keeps moving. Interiors get the same continuity with plaster repairs and trim work folded into the one schedule instead of three trades' calendars.
Colours without the paralysis
We're painters, not dictators — but we'll say plainly what wears well: whites with warmth for federation interiors, deeper trims where the architecture asks for definition, exterior schemes that sit against sandstone and garden rather than shouting at the street. Sample pots on your actual walls beat any fan deck, and we'll brush them out for you.
Common questions
Do you take on single rooms, or only whole houses?
Both. Single rooms and trim packages sit comfortably alongside whole interiors and exterior repaints — smaller jobs are often grouped with carpentry or plaster work in the same visit. Every job gets a fixed written quote that states the preparation, which is the part you're actually buying.
Why do painting quotes vary so much?
Because prep is invisible on quote day and obvious two winters later. Washing, sanding, filling, priming and two full coats takes days; 'one coat over dust' takes hours. When a quote is half the others, the missing half is preparation — compare what's written, not just the number.
Can you fix rot and damage before painting?
This is our real advantage: the carpentry and the painting come from one crew. Rotten sills and weatherboards get cut out and replaced, trims repaired, gyprock patched — then painted. A pure painter paints over problems or leaves you to find another trade first; we just fix them in sequence.
What paint do you use?
Quality trade lines from the major Australian brands, specified by surface — washable low-sheen for family walls, enamel or hybrid enamel for trims and doors, exterior systems matched to the substrate. Brands and products are named in the quote.
Interior painting with the family home — how disruptive is it?
Room by room, furniture centred and sheeted, floors protected, and each room handed back finished before the next is opened. Low-odour products indoors, and a schedule that respects the fact that people live there.
