Decks built for North Shore blocks

Sloping sites, sandstone shelves, established gardens, houses with character — Lower North Shore blocks rarely give you a flat rectangle to work with, and that's exactly the work I like. I design and build decks across Castlecrag, Willoughby, Northbridge, Mosman and the surrounding suburbs: low platforms that float over sandstone, elevated decks off living rooms with proper balustrades, and pool-side decks that cope with water and sun.

The part you'll never see matters most. Cheap decks fail underneath — undersized joists, posts sitting in soil, brackets that rust out near the harbour. Ours are built on engineered footings and H4-treated or steel substructure, with stainless or hot-dip galvanised fixings that suit coastal air, so the boards you chose still have something solid under them in twenty years.

What's included in every deck quote

What moves the price

No two North Shore decks cost the same, and the reasons are usually visible from the back step. When I quote, these are the factors doing the work:

I put a fixed written quote on all of it after a site visit, so the number you agree to is the number you pay.

How I work

You call or send photos, I come out, and you get an honest quote — if a repair or a re-deck over existing framing would serve you better than a new build, I'll say so. Then I turn up when I say I will, keep you posted as the build progresses, and finish properly: oiled or left to weather as you prefer, offcuts gone, garden as I found it. Most of my deck work comes from someone standing on a deck I built next door — that only happens if the last job was done right.

Quicker than reading? Call, or send me a photo of the job and I'll tell you what it needs.

Common questions

How much does a new deck cost on the North Shore?

Every block is different, so I don't quote from a chart. I come out, look at the site, and give you a fixed written itemised quote — no obligation. The things that move the number are size, the boards you choose, slope and access, height and balustrades, and the approval path. Whatever I quote is what you pay.

Do I need council approval for a deck in NSW?

Often no. A deck attached to your house can usually be built as exempt development if it's no more than 25m² and sits less than 1m above ground level (with other siting rules). Bigger or higher decks need a CDC or DA — the approval guide explains the paths, and I tell you which applies, in writing, before any work starts.

What makes one deck cost more than another?

Mostly what you can't see from the street. Elevated or sloping sites need more substructure and balustrades; hard access means more labour; premium hardwoods and composites cost more than treated pine; and a CDC or DA approval path adds time. I name every one of these in the itemised quote, so you can see exactly where the money goes — and where a smaller design could save it.

Hardwood or composite decking?

Hardwood (spotted gum, blackbutt, merbau) looks and ages beautifully and costs less up front, but wants re-oiling every 12–18 months. Composite (Trex, Millboard, ModWood) costs more on day one and then asks almost nothing of you. I build both — compare on the timber and composite pages.

How long does a deck take to build?

A straightforward 20–30m² deck is usually 1–2 weeks on site. Elevated decks, difficult access or approval requirements add time — your written quote includes the schedule, and you get progress updates as I go.

Who actually does the work?

I do — with my own small crew, not subcontractors you've never met. You deal with the same person from first site visit to final sweep-up.
