A carpenter's kitchen, not a showroom's
Strip the appliances away and a kitchen is cabinetry — the trade I'm built on. That changes the renovation in visible ways: carcasses and fronts made in my joinery workshop to your room's actual millimetres, panels scribed to hundred-year-old walls, bulkheads closed properly, doors aligned and staying aligned. Showroom kitchens are installed; ours are built — and in Willoughby and Mosman's not-quite-square homes, the difference is permanent and daily.
Layout honesty first
The best money in a kitchen renovation is the money you don't spend moving services that were fine where they were. First conversation, I'll tell you plainly whether your layout is worth keeping (most are), worth one strategic change (an island where the bench dog-legged), or genuinely worth rebuilding. When walls move, structural work is licence-classed — delivered through a licensed building partner I work with, stated plainly in the quote, certificates supplied.
What moves the price
No two kitchens cost the same, but the levers are no mystery. What moves a quote up or down:
- Size, and whether the layout stays or changes
- Level of cabinetry — carcass count, door fronts, internal fit-out
- Benchtop material
- Appliances kept or replaced
- Services moved — plumbing and electrical
- Approvals, where strata applies
I walk through each of these with you at your place, then put the whole job in a fixed written quote after the site visit — one number, itemised, before anything is booked.
The parts you'll touch every day
Selections decided with samples on your bench, not renders: benchtops in the post-ban reality (porcelain, natural stone, timber, quality laminate — honest trade-offs each), soft-close hardware from brands with fifteen-year reputations, drawers where drawers beat doors, lighting layered for cooking rather than photography, and appliance allowances set honestly so the quote survives contact with your actual taste.
Kitchens for the houses I actually work in
Federation semis in Cammeray with chimney breasts mid-wall, Willoughby bungalows where the kitchen grew in three eras, Chatswood and Lane Cove apartments with strata rules and lift bookings, Mosman homes where the finish bar is set by the rest of the house — each changes the job, none changes the standard. Apartment kitchens run with by-law approvals and access rules handled by me; period homes get cabinetry that defers to original details rather than fighting them.
Managed like your week matters
A kitchen renovation runs through the middle of family life, so the management is the product: an agreed schedule, trades sequenced tight, a temporary kitchen corner that keeps breakfast possible, floors protected along the traffic route, a weekly progress updatein plain English, and milestone payments that track completed stages. Then a working kitchen, handed over clean, on the date I wrote down at the start.
